Why a family health record is worth having before you need it.
The airport Wi-Fi, the coffee shop, the hospital's guest network — Indian public Wi-Fi is convenient and often the only option when mobile data is patchy. It's also less safe than most people assume. Accessing…
The average Indian internet user reuses passwords across 5-10 accounts. When one service is breached, all accounts sharing that password are compromised. Health accounts are particularly targeted because health data…
A password alone is the weakest defence for a health account. Data breaches of large services regularly expose password lists; SIM-swap attacks intercept SMS codes; phishing captures credentials. Two-factor…
WhatsApp is how most Indian families share medical documents. The pediatrician group where you WhatsApp a photo of the child's rash. The elderly parent's daughter who shares the discharge summary with siblings…
India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP), passed in 2023, is the country's first comprehensive data privacy law. Health data gets specific attention because it's classified as sensitive personal data.…
A country with abundant sunlight has one of the world's highest rates of vitamin D deficiency — 70-90% of urban Indians test low. The reasons are cultural (indoor lifestyles, covered clothing, dark skin needing more…
A digital health record is a specific tool for a specific job. It stores, organises, and makes accessible the information about a family's health. It does not, on its own, produce health. That comes from a different…
A complete family health record is not one thing. It is a system with several interlocking parts, each with its own job, together forming something greater than the sum. Understanding the whole system — after…
A comprehensive digital health record is superior to a paper folder for most purposes, most of the time. Not all purposes, not all the time. There are specific situations where paper — physical, signed, in-hand —…
Ignore the aspirational 'complete digital health record with 10 years of data' for a moment. The specific minimum every adult in India should have accessible today — on their phone or in a secure folder — is five…
The case for a digital health record is often made in vague terms — 'convenience', 'peace of mind', 'better care'. The specific cost of not having one is much more concrete. Duplicate tests, missed insurance claim…
A health record that has been running for two years without a cleanup starts to feel like clutter. Documents in the wrong category, duplicate uploads, obsolete prescriptions, outdated care team lists. The record is…
A health app might be excellent for three years and stop being the right choice — features change, pricing shifts, ownership moves, better options appear. Moving to a different app is a real option, but only if the…
A phone with a family's health record on it is a lot of trust in one device. When it is lost or stolen, the specific steps in the next hours determine whether the incident is a nuisance or a genuine data-exposure…
Starting a family health record from zero is not a technology decision so much as a project. A weekend of focused work — six to eight hours across two days — produces a record that will otherwise never get built.…
A person who checks their BP at home three times a week generates 150+ readings a year. A diabetic checking blood sugar twice a day generates 700+. A person weighing weekly generates 52. Each of these is either a…
A family member with a developmental condition, a chronic special need, or a lifelong disability generates a health record different in shape from an average person's. More specialists, more therapies, more ongoing…
Major surgery ends when the discharge summary is written. Recovery, and the specific things that go wrong during it, do not. The weeks and months after a major operation are when preventable complications happen —…
The way health records were shared for decades — a photocopy handed over, an email attachment sent, a WhatsApp forward — was fundamentally unscoped. Once shared, the record was out of the patient's control. Modern…
Getting sick in a country where you do not speak the language, do not know the doctors, and do not have your regular medicine on you is stressful in every way. What can be prepared in advance is what makes the…
An AI feature in a health app is a piece of software that will read, remember, and reason about the most sensitive information a family produces. What that AI should and should not do is not just a technical…
India has 22 official languages and dozens of widely-spoken others. A medical AI that only works in English serves a fraction of the population. The quality of Indian-language AI has improved dramatically in the last…
A discharge summary uses about 40 medical terms most patients cannot define. A lab report uses another 20. A specialist letter, another 30. Multiply by every visit, and Indian patients accumulate a vocabulary problem…
Not a folder of photographs. The difference is whether you can find one number from two years ago in under a minute.
The phrase 'AI medical assistant' is used to mean at least five different things. It can be a chatbot that answers general health questions, a prescription reader, a symptom checker, a documentation aid for doctors,…
A health record that has run for twenty years is a valuable thing — and a hazardous one, if not maintained. The value is the trend line, the history, the pattern of chronic conditions across decades. The hazard is…
Startups fail. Providers get acquired. Business models change and health apps get discontinued. This is not a rare edge case; it has happened repeatedly to Indian health apps in the last decade, sometimes with weeks…
The moment a health record provider becomes essential is also the moment you need to be able to leave them. Not because they will fail — most won't — but because the value of your record is worth what you can carry…
Encryption is the difference between a stolen database being a real breach and being a directory of unreadable garbage. For personal health data, understanding what kind of encryption protects what — and where the…
A digital medical history vault is the storage layer of a personal health record — the place where every document, image, prescription, and result actually lives, in a form that is secure, searchable, and permanent.…
A shared family health record between two adults is not the same as automatic full visibility into everything. Two people who share a life may still want privacy about specific parts of their health — mental health…
A parent's medical record after they pass away is not just a stack of expired documents. It is a source for the family's own health history, sometimes for insurance and legal matters, and — most importantly for…
A family health record with two people is a shared folder. A family record with six people — two adults, two children, two elderly parents — is a small operation. Without deliberate setup, records get filed against…
A health question typed into an AI assistant is data. Depending on the service, that data may be used to train future models, retained in your conversation history, accessible to human reviewers for quality control,…
Once you know what AI is bad at in health, the question is what is left — and quite a lot is, when the question is well-formed. AI is genuinely good at a set of tasks that were previously either paid or slow:…
A symptom checker — the kind of tool that asks 'where does it hurt?', 'how long?', 'what makes it worse?' — feels like it should be one of AI's easy wins. It is one of the harder ones. Symptoms are messy, human…
Beyond the common conditions — heart disease, diabetes, cancer — Indian families have specific inherited conditions with higher prevalence than the global average. Some are well-known; some are under-diagnosed and…
A family health pedigree is not a family tree with names. It is a structured diagram — or a structured list — that captures who was diagnosed with what, at what age, and how they are related to you. Three generations…
The most useful health data in an Indian family lives in the memories of the oldest surviving members. Getting it out is a specific social skill — asking directly about disease and death can feel intrusive; asking…
A commercial genetic test costs ₹8,000-30,000 and produces a report that is easy to over-interpret. A conversation with your parents and grandparents over one Sunday costs nothing and produces a family health history…
The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, and the ABHA number every citizen can create for free, are meant to knit India's fragmented health data into a coherent, patient-controlled system. Some parts are already…
A hospital portal holds what the hospital knows about you. A personal health record holds what you know about you. For most Indian families dealing with multiple hospitals, clinics, labs, and doctors, the second is…
Every large Indian corporate hospital has a patient portal. Almost every patient discharged from those hospitals has been given a login. Almost none of them use it. The reason is not that the portals are useless —…
Every household in India that has kept a medical folder for more than a decade has the same problem: the folder is fine until you need something specific from it, at which point it is a treasure hunt. The comparison…
Grand claims about digital transformation of healthcare mostly obscure the smaller, boring wins that a digital record produces on any given Tuesday. This is a list of the actual benefits — not the pitch deck kind,…
Emailing a lab report to your specialist feels like the modern thing to do. It is not — it is the digital equivalent of leaving a copy on the bench at reception. Email was designed in 1971, before privacy was a…
A very Indian problem: you have the test done, get the report, and three months later a different specialist orders exactly the same test again because they cannot see the first one. Duplicate tests waste money,…
A person who travels regularly falls sick in unfamiliar cities more often than they realise. A migraine in Bangalore is manageable; the same migraine in a hotel room in Bangkok with a doctor who has never met you is…
A family's medical papers live in the wrong places: a folder in one parent's cupboard, three photos on somebody's phone, a printed insurance card in a wallet, a discharge summary emailed to a relative and never…
A family tree with health information on it is one of the most underused diagnostic tools in medicine. Almost every meaningful risk factor for the diseases people worry about — heart attack, diabetes, several…
